The curtains rise, The night descends
One story ends and one begins:
Two lovers’ hearts, once torn apart,
Their life-blood spilt upon this spot

The Earth now stained, a Holy Mark,

* A Shanis is a song of remembrance. The Shadur, the indigenous people of the Misamee use
these songs as a kind of oral tradition for preserving and teaching history. Such songs may also
be sung for ritual purposes at certain times of the year or during festivals and other gatherings.
